Meet your hosts

Beginning of 1965 in Geneva, a young mother went next door with her new born to seek advice. She had noticed the neighbour lady with two toddlers. This more experienced lady happens to be my mother in law and her younger toddler Valerie, my wife to be...

Both families always kept in touch. Its quiet funny to find ourselves in the respective family albums as toddlers, youngsters and much older… Both families travelled. It was British Columbia in Canada for the ones and Eastern Transvaal in South Africa for the others…until 1987, where Valerie and I got closer…like VERY close! Could not eat or sleep for a full week-end! Ah, love…

No rush though as we both had to finish our respective studies. Mine, a basic marketing and management graduation and Valerie her pharmacist diploma. We lived seven years on the boarder between France & Switzerland. We had it easy with good positions, but suffered with much grey weather, humidity and short-minded people. In 1991 a serious incident made us decide to go all the way with our long dreamed goal of going to Africa. In 1995 off we went with our 20ft container, little experience and no jobs! We both worked at Air France Johannesburg and, even started a small business related to the airline industry. Eleven years later, two beautiful daughters Chloé and Charlotte and much joy, we decided to move back to France. We thought at that time it was a good decision for my career as well as getting closer to family. Off we went! Got to Picardie a very green region north of Paris and I discovered the joys of Roissy-Charles de Gaulle. Valerie went back to her pharmacist background, managing the only very busy pharmacy of our small village. Before long we pictured it was not our cup of tea. Besides, we were back to miserable weather… After 15 years of great experience at Air France, we decided it was time to move on.

We had been browsing the internet for eight long years, looking for the long dreamed lodge or guest house. After a couple of tries in Mpumalanga (close to the Kruger Park) we then started looking at the Western Cape. We eventually came across the property of our dreams!… Just outside Cape Town, in a lovely and peaceful area. After much red tape, we happily became the official owners of Carmichael Guesthouse in September 2010!

Since then we have refurbished and upgraded many parts of the house, and we continue working tirelessly to make Carmichael Guesthouse a warm and memorable visit for all our guests. We look forward to welcoming you.
